The American Bar Association Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Professional Liability presented the Spring 2018 National Legal Malpractice Conference in the Nation’s Capital April 15-27, 2018.This event offered the profession’s best programming on legal malpractice issues, developments and trending topics. There were  networking opportunities with legal practitioners from across the United States, a collaborative workshop with the Presidents Working Group to Advance Well-Being in the Legal Profession and a special reception at the Library of Congress.

In attendance were KD attorneys Brett Scher, Greg Hyman, Barry Brodsky and Andy Waxler

Recognizing the importance of well-being in the legal profession, in September 2017, at President Hilarie Bass’s request, the ABA Board of Governors formed the Working Group to Advance Well-Being in the Legal Profession, with an emphasis on helping legal employers support healthy work environments.

To achieve this goal, one of the first steps is to formulate a national model policy on lawyer well-being for use in law firms. This interactive workshop is intended to create practical and workable law firm policies to reinforce lawyer well-being as a core component of the ethical obligations of competence and diligence as well as professionalism. Using a collaborative process, firm leaders, risk management providers, and subject matter experts, including members of lawyer assistance programs, will generate ideas, innovations, and tools to develop this national model. Participants will also learn ways to foster healthy lifestyles within firms as well as how to address addiction and mental health issues to help lawyers as part of a firm’s risk management strategy.
