Insurance Litigator Delights Readers with Humor Column, Daily Journal, ft. Louie Castoria

Louie H. Castoria, the co-managing partner of Kaufman Dolowich & Voluck’s San Francisco office, has been writing a weekly humor column for the Half Moon Bay Review for two decades.

Children often mistake longtime insurance litigator for a pirate.

“Six to 8-year-old boys walk up to me in the airport all the time and just say, ‘Are you a pirate?” the Kaufman Dolowich & Voluck LLP partner explained. “And I’ll say, ‘No, but you’re close. I’m a lawyer.”

Castoria suffered a central retinal vein occlusion, or blockage, to his right eye 15 years ago, and he’s worn an eye patch almost ever since. Humor has been a coping mechanism, the attorney said, noting he often begins public speaking engagements by saying, “I’m going to keep one eye on the clock.”

“There’s no point in trying to hide it,” Castoria said of his eye patch, adding that the ocular accessory can be an asset.
