Overview

Timothy Ortolani focuses his practice in general liability, maritime, professional liability, and commercial litigation. He represents clients in matters arising on vessels at ports and within marine terminals, and which frequently implicate the Jones Act and the Longshore & Harbor Worker’s Compensation Act. Other matters he handles involve contested liability of non-profit organizations, general lease and business disputes, and the various professionals’ obligations.

Mr. Ortolani has experience litigating in state and federal court and in both the private and public sectors. While at Kaufman Dolowich  from 2017-2019, some of his successes include helping to obtain summary judgment on behalf of a commercial client in a multi-million-dollar lease dispute, as well as on behalf of a maritime client in a Jones Act case and on behalf of a foreign shipping company in a negligence action. He also helped obtain dismissal on behalf of a non-¬profit organization in an international custody dispute, an outcome later affirmed on appeal.

Mr. Ortolani’s experience in the public sector includes serving as an Assistant Prosecutor in Union County, New Jersey, where he represented the State in numerous appeals, obtained guilty verdicts in bench trials and participated in various other successful prosecutions. He began his legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable Thomas R. Vena, J.S.C. in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Essex County.

Experience- Selective Decisions 

  • Hollywood Café Diner, Inc. v Jaffee, 473 N.J. Super. 210 (App. Div. 2022) – clarified the standard of review – good cause shown versus exceptional circumstances – to be applied for motions to extend the discovery end date.
